Hello and Welcome!

Hey, there. I’m Anne (she/her), please, just call me Anne. I am a Bi-racial Black, multi-cultural, cis, queer, femme, vegetarian, womxn made and raised in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). I live and profit from the unceded lands of the Duwamish and Puyallup people. I acknowledge the direct correlation to this land theft and the continued genocide and sexual violence towards our Indigenous people. As is blatantly visible with our current local Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) epidemic. In memorandum of the assaulted, lost, and/or murdered loved ones and ancestors on our land and beyond, I strive to increase awareness around the harmful effects of colonization.

My Journey

Can you believe I've been studying sex since 1998? That's right, even way back then I knew that I wanted to be a Sex Therapist and Educator. Since then, times have changed, and of course, I have changed. My clinical and academic skills continue to evolve, however, my work had a more drastic shift a few years ago while I was researching miscegenation for my first publication, “More than Ebony and Ivory: Complexities of working with Interracial Couples in Sex Therapy" (Mauro, 2021). I used my identity as a reference point of sorts in my examination of the history of American sexuality. And, it has not been pretty. What I found was great tragedy. Fallacies enveloped in what we were taught as truth and disguised as romanticized history. I spent years uncovering truths and unraveling untruths. It was then that I started to grasp the historical sexual traumas that are linked to our present-day sexual suffering. I took a deep dive into colonization and sex and came out with a greater understanding of the impact of colonialism, imperialism, capitalism, whyte supremacy and patriarchy on our sexualities. Doing the work to decolonize myself provided a framework to decolonize my work and sharpen my anti-oppressive and anti-racist skills. I am still uncovering how westerncentric cisheteropatriarchal practices enter my work. However, rest assured, when they are uncovered, I work to dismantle that shit!

As far as theoretical orientations go, I find both intersectionality and ecosystems relational therapy most helpful in looking at how historical and political factors are interacting with other identifiers such as age, birth nation, immigration states, socioeconomic status, disability, sexual orientation, gender, kink orientation, etc. Both models are trauma informed and are useful in assessment and treatment. As a multi-generational nerd, I also draw on Bowen's work, the Genogram, for assessment of intergenerational resilience and sexual legacy.

When I'm not therapizing, supervising, educating, mothering, tending to my dog, cat, fish, rabbit, plants, and trees, you can find me on my motorcycle riding as close as I can to the sea breeze.
